If he had been from the British National party, the festival would have had nothing to do with him, but as he was a fellow traveller of the Socialist Workers party, the literary ladies in their floral dresses and the bookish gentlemen in their ill-fitting jackets welcomed him to the quadrangles of Oxford.

After a mere 20 break in convictions (and 72 criminal convictions in total), he's going to be doing some hard time.

Well, not really.

Judge J.D. Evans said he was impressed with a letter Young had presented him.

“It shows you have direction in your life,” said Evans. “It may just be a pipe dream to believe you won’t commit any more crimes … but I’m going to take a chance on you.”

Evans sentenced Young to three months in custody, to be served concurrently with his existing sentence.

Will, that should work. I've heard pipe dreams are a great sentencing method...

I wonder how many letters to dumb judges this guy has written? About 72, I'd bet.

It was a banner week for Judge Evans:

Despite the Crown’s request for a two-year prison sentence, the man responsible for robbing a Bracebridge convenience store at knife-point walked out of court with his friends and family on Monday.

Well, probably a first time offender, right?

Roper has at least 10 prior convictions and was on probation at the time he robbed the Mac’s.

Well, of COURSE no judge would be dumb enough to, you know, give him probation again...oh, oh:

Evans gave Roper two-for-one credit for the 102 days he served in pretrial custody and sentenced him to 16 months house arrest, two years probation and 100 hours of community service. He also ordered Roper to repay the $155 he had stolen.

A Bracebridge man who has accumulated a significant number of alcohol-related convictions in the past few months added to his total last week.
On Tuesday, Daniel Murphy, 26, pleaded guilty in a Bracebridge courtroom to assault and several counts of breaching probation.

Well, maybe ol' Murph will finally learn his legal lesson...I mean, its not a foreign concept to him, these second, third and fourth chances, right?

Court heard that Murphy had been ordered not to drink after being convicted of several alcohol-related offences in 2008.

“I know I can do it,” said Murphy.

Evans agreed to release Murphy and place him on an additional 18 months probation.

But just in case you think this law school reject only rules on minor things like armed robbery and causing someone's jaw to be sliced, I give you tomorrow's headline: "Woman killed by ex-boyfriend"...

On Thursday, Costas Bilissis, 23, was convicted of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment and attacking her and her new boyfriend. Bilissis was sentenced to the equivalent of 15 months in prison for charges that include breaking and entering, assault causing bodily harm, threatening death and various probation violations...this is the second time Bilissis has been convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend

That's the rather dry description. If you'd like, here's the "Stephen King" cut:

Bilissis grabbed his ex-girlfriend, threw her to the ground and told her he loved her. He then proceeded to attack her boyfriend before fleeing the scene.
Police found the boyfriend bleeding from the ear and the ankle when they arrived, said Jeanes.

“I’ve dreamt of doing this,” police quoted Bilissis as saying.

So Hitchens immediately takes out a pen and writes “No, no, F-ck You” on the poster. I don’t know if he’d digested the story and decided to fuck with them anyway, or else he was just reacting to the modified swastika on the poster.

Now, the Syrian Nazis are not popular and neighborhoods have tried to get their posters taken down. But then they threaten people and cause problems.

So the state leaves them up. To avoid getting their posters defaced or torn down, they post a paid Nazi watcher to keep an eye on their posters.

Well, when this Syrian Nazi goon saw Hitch do this, he confronted him and kinda-sorta attacked him. I say kinda sorta attacked, because what his main intent was was to delay Hitchens from leaving — until the ten Nazi goons he had just texted on his cell phone could arrive.

All I can say is that two supposed leaders of two supposed national parties have signed onto a document that includes the phrase Canadians and Quebecers.

I think I've just seen the Tory meme for the next generation or two. The Liberals have no support out west, none outside of Toronto in Ontario, none in Quebec, and only the typical opportunistic support in the Atlantic provinces.

Mulroney was able to toss together alienated Western voters, the Big Blue Machine in Ontario, Quebec separatists and the typical opportunistic support in the Atlantic provinces. But he was one man leading one party.

I'm conservative, which means I play the long game, whether gambling, investing or in politics. I hope that's what Harper is doing, both for the sake of the right, and the sake of the nation. And the long game says that only one party of the three headed Cerberus will survive. And I'm praying it isn't the Liberals.

I am more or less a die-hard trickle-down,dyed-in-the-wool supply-sider. Jude Wanniski was, if not the actual creator of the theory, certainly one of its greatest believers.

Despite being smeared by a very broad brush by the left as a hard core right-winger, he was actually very pragmatic and non-partisan. Although I certainly don't agree with everything he came up with (Pat Buchanan? He should be shot and pissed on with great bladder and regularity. Farrakhan? Ugh.), he did nail the problems the Republicans have with getting elected.

This is from January 24, 1994 (emphasis mine):

In the immediate future, the Republican Party is in a better position than the Democratic Party to offer an entirely new deal to the American people — a party realignment that casts the GOP as the party of opportunity, with the Democrats cast as the party of security. So shouldn't Magna unload those racetracks or that golf course for the money it needs to stay afloat before they come knocking on my door?

Remembering

I have no personal memories of war, for which I thank those who sacrificed their lives and limbs. And, as my aunt once wrote decades ago, those who came back "disturbed", which we put a little more nicely these days as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

My father was too young for World War II, and his father was too young for World War I, and too old for World War II. But three of my dad's brothers served, although none saw combat. As well, two of my dad's brothers-in-law served.

One of them, Bryson McNaughton, was an engineer who served behind the lines as they say. Except the Luftwaffe had a different idea of where the "line" was, and bombed him. He escaped by hiding under a truck, perhaps not the action in the training books, but it worked.

According to my cousin, they were once watching "Hawaii Five-O", of all things, and a siren started up. Apparently, this brought up a dark memory and Uncle Bryson, as tough a northern woodsman as you could get, shook like a leaf for several minutes.

This was 30 years after the war.

Something to think about when you're trying to get to the 10th level of some video game...

I'm conservative. In a "leave me the fuck alone" kind of conservative kind of way.

I live in a very left-wing nabe (Beaches-East York, Toronto). I voted for Marilyn Churley (NDP) in the recent federal election in order try to get rid of an odious Liberal (Maria Minna). It didn't work. Minna is like a cockroach. Yes, that is metaphorical. No, I don't care what you think.

I hope the former Mayor of East York, Michael Prue, wins the Ontario NDP leadership. I may vote for him as he is the kind of pragmatic lefty who will make real, positive changes, beyond anything Obama will be able to achieve. And certainly anything what passes for conservative will these days.

I only do this because there are no real conservatives anymore, and until one comes along, might was well fuck up the tragically mis-named Liberals.

Or, I may vote Independent. I actually signed the nomination papers of an acquaitance while living in the Annex (picture a little piece of Berkeley, California) who, because he was an anarchist, hated government as much as I did. Didn't vote for him, though. Have voted Independent before, though.

My first vote was the 1985 Ontario election. I'm from Muskoka (two hours north of Toronto, "cottage county", lots of old money then, lots of large cottages. Many more now, monster places with no character.)

No, we didn't own a cottage. We owned a house, built mostly by my dad's own hands. He was a carpenter, a 9th grade drop out (his three brothers were all in the war at the time, there was the family farm, and three sisters to take care of. Not really a choice most 14 year olds have to make these days).

My mother has her 12th grade, but made a living cleaning said cottages. And took in laundry. And provided day care, when day care was called "babysitting". I guess we were working poor, but my brother and I never knew it.

So, in 1985 I was back from my "tour" of Europe, post-high school. Literally seen Paris, and couldn't wait to get out of Muskoka full-time. Yeah, I was that dumb. I joined my mother cleaning said cottages that summer (in addition to yard work and full-time in a Marina...)

We had just finished a long day of cleaning. This was full cleaning: furniture moved, heavy old cottage windows fully opened and cleaned, etc. While I did much of the "grunt" work, I can't help think that the heavy work contributed to my mother's arthritis,which has almost confined her to bed at times.

As my mother collected our wages (no more than minimum wage, really), the big, fat toad of man (and I'm not exaggerating, he looked like a Dickens caricature), while counting out the $20 bills said "you remember to vote Tory now", like he was LITERALLY a Dickens character.

Of course, I voted David Peterson (i.e., Liberal) as opposed to Muskoka's own son, Frank Miller.

My mother probably (she never tells) voted NDP as she has all her life (my dad admitted a terrible family secret: he voted for Trudeau the first time, while calling him a pretentious asshole the rest of the time. He is also an NDP supporter, real working man stuff. See above).

This was the first election the Ontario Tories lost in 40 years. And they deserved it. The rot had set in.

Of course, Peterson got all Liberal arrogant after the next election, and the rest is unfortunately history: NDP majority government coinciding with a recession. Bad news. Raise taxes, raise the welfare rates, and wonder why the economy tanks EVEN WORSE THAN EXPECTED. Geeze.

So, where was I?

I started to realize that I actually wanted to BE that fat Tory toad. I knew that socialism was counter-productive. I knew that Liberals, generally, weren't to be trusted (and seriously, non-Liberal left-wingers, how can you disagree?)

So, I bought into the Mulroney bullshit. Also dumb. Good to get rid of those damn Libs, but as I asked a Joe Clarke supporter once, what the hell is the difference?

As far as I could tell, the only difference between Joe Clarke and the Liberals was:

1) PC colour was blue, Liberal colour was red
2) Liberals were in power, PCs weren't

Then again, as a gay-marriage supporting, pot-legalizing, porn-loving agnostic, I'm about as comfortable with social conservatives as a rabbit is in a cage of starved pythons.

So, drop me a line if you've read this far. Fuck knows I haven't...

The computer systems of both the Obama and McCain campaigns were victims of a sophisticated cyberattack by an unknown "foreign entity," prompting a federal investigation, NEWSWEEK reports today.

At the Obama headquarters in midsummer, technology experts detected what they initially thought was a computer virus—a case of "phishing," a form of hacking often employed to steal passwords or credit-card numbers. But by the next day, both the FBI and the Secret Service came to the campaign with an ominous warning: "You have a problem way bigger than what you understand," an agent told Obama's team. "You have been compromised, and a serious amount of files have been loaded off your system." Ok, not sure if this counts, but I'm at least I'm starting to drink now.

So, first things first: Craig Ramsay.

Surprise to all those who think this is a political blog. Nope, its a Gemini's blog. So that means, with a lucky spin, first post is hockey.

As found here, Craig was born in Weston, Ontario (i.e., Toronto).

Many things stand out about his career:

1) he spent his entire NHL career with one team
2) he had 8 straight 20 goal seasons (amazing for a defensive forward)
3) he played 10 straight seasons without missing a game
4 ) he had TWO seasons without a penalty, including ONE FULL SEASON

Now, as the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy goes to "the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability", I guess the powers that be were concentrating on the second part when the awarded the 71-72 Trophy to Jean Ratelle for:

Ok, Craig was a rookie and didn't play a full season, and Ratelle's Points Per Game ratio is pretty damn great compared to 2 minors. No argument.

The fact that he only won one Selke is pretty weird too, but considering that the award was only started in 1977, and the obvious Montreal Canadiens bias in the media, its still a win.

Yes, coupled with Don Luce (damn the Sabres for firing him, they are just recovering now), the Sabres, coupled with good goalies, large D (Korab, Schonfield were big guys when it wasn't that normal), and of course the French Connection, is it any wonder I became a Sabres fan?

Yes, pretty much every other Friday you'll read me drunk blogging. Why? Why not?

But really, I am an "every other weekend father". In other words, I have access 4 days out of the month, plus two other weeks a year. But things are working out, my son is 17, great marks in school, great comments from teachers, etc. So tonight is a time for a few beer, tucking my wife in early (big weekend...my public school reunion, installing our new dish washer despite no plumbing skills, etc...).

First, do the Liberals seriously want us to believe that Ontario's arts community is less than 25% of Canada's as a whole?

Second, here's what the Ontario government says elsewhere:

So we see that "Arts, Entertainment & Recreation" directly produces only $3,892M to Ontario's GDP. As Dawg points out, it is wrong to confuse ahts with entertainment, so the actual figure would be LOWER.

I guess the Liberals want us to believe that the indirect bump to the GDP is four times this figure.

Very Important Stuff

Ok, so there are two elections going on, the market is melting, gas prices are up and down like a tramp's panties on prom night, but let's get to the really important stuff:

Hockey is starting!

I'll have more and more to say about this season, but folks should know: I am a Buffalo Sabres fan, and I am fully convinced that THIS is the year. My reasoning is simple: the last team that won the President's Trophy one year, then miss the playoffs the next year was the New York Rangers. And guess what they did the year after THAT: yes, they won the Cup.

That, and the fact that Miller can't possibly be as bad as he was last year (or used as much...c'mon Lindy!), and the kids are a year older. So there is my prediction (or curse if they blow it...).

This is also the time to get my hockey pool team going. I haven't done so well the last two seasons (counting the playoffs separately). I won two of the last three before that, and was third the other time. So, time to plug in that data (which I will, of course, ignore by going with a hunch.)

Unless I've misread Barack Obama completely, I believe he is an earnest, relatively honest guy who truly thinks he can make a difference. I have no problem with guys like this, but the world is full of them of such dreamers and they all can't be right.

So, I don't really think he meant to call Sarah Palin a pig. I think he is naive if he thinks that by painting this close to the line, though, his political opponents wouldn't be over all this like, er, white on rice.

He was trying to be verbally clever. That's what good speechifyers do. Turn a phrase, get your audience going. Of course, this rhetorical flourish worked rather better back when your words didn't move as fast. You could give one speech in one town, hop the train, and use a completely different one just down the tracks. Very few people would hear both.

Now, when we have speeches posted BEFORE they are even delivered, its different.

That takes care of the pig.

What of the boy?

Well, ever hear the expressions, "just one of the boys", "boys in the backroom"? How about "boys and their toys", or "The Boys' Club", and other variations?

What are the chances of ANYONE using any of them in conjunction with Obama?

And if so, what are the chances of His political opponents claiming racism?

O'Neill was eventually found guilty of dangerous driving causing Visicale's death. She was also convicted of perjury for lying at her bail hearing about her criminal record and multiple suspensions.
"Nothing, it seems, will prevent Ms. O'Neill from doing what she wants rather than what the law permits," said Justice Harry Laforme as he sentenced O'Neill to three years in prison and banned her from driving for 10 years. He noted her "history of dishonesty, the nature of her criminal activity and her insistence upon driving regardless of what the courts order."
In March 2004, O'Neill was out on parole, after serving nine months at Grand Valley Institution.

Now, what are the chances that, if convicted of these alleged crimes, the judge will say at sentencing, "sorry, you've been shown you can't be trusted. You've asked for, and were given, a second chance. You blew it. Your sentences from this day forward will now be required to be towards the maximum, not the minimum"?

Back in the 1999 Ontario election, Dalton McGuinty used a man's death while on a waiting list as an election prop to bash Mike harris, only stopping when the widow asked him to. So Liberals are very used to using death and misfortune to hammer political opponents. I have no problem with this (don't want to be hypocritical as I've hammered McGuinty and Miller for the propane explosion deaths here in Toronto), but as Liberals are generally the kind of wimps that brag about how tough they are, then cry when punched back, it is a bit pathetic.

Now, Dion and Kinsella are bringing up Walkerton. Their monkeys, trained and otherwise, are in full shit flinging mode. As usual with shit flinging monkeys, though, small things like facts are second thoughts.

So, in a blast from the past, my response to one of the numerous shit flinging monkeys from way back on UseNet. Perhaps Dion, Kinsella or a shit flinging monkey of their choice can explain:

a) why a supposedly fully funded and fully staffed Ministry of the Environment didn't have the power to stop Walkerton from digging Well #5, even though it knew that the well was in the wrong place, at the wrong depth, in the wrong soil;
b) why it allowed Walkerton to use the well before it was approved;
c) why it approved the well even though it knew that it was contaminated;
d) why it allowed Walkerton to drill Well #6 in the wrong place, in the wrong soil;
e) why it allowed Walkerton to continue to use Well #6 even though it designated it as "high risk for contamination'';
f) why it allowed Walkerton to drill Well #7 on land that it had designated as "high risk for contamination ''
g) why it did nothing when a random sample by Agriculture Canada of 1,300 wells showed that 34% were contaminated;
h) why it did nothing when its own reports showed that 120 of 490 water plants weren't adequately testing for contaminants;
i) why it ignored the Auditor General;
j) why it kept no well records;
BTW, if Mike Harris is, as you say, solely responsible for Walkterton,
why did all of this occur before 1995?

The fact is, and it is a pesky one when you are a shit flinging monkey, is that the Brothers Grim, i.e. the Koebel Brothers, lied and committed fraud for over 20 years, and the various governments of the day (Bill Davis' Red Tories, David Peterson's Liberals, Bob Rae's NDP) DID NOT CATCH THEM.

If anyone takes the time to read Justice O'Connor's report, you will also read about the "60 year rain", i.e., a rainfall that only happens every 60 years.

My son lives in Mississauga with his mother. He is taking a co-op course for two additional credits, which requires a few days of in-class work. My ex is a teacher who is taking a course herself, and wasn't able to get him to class for two days.

Ex asked, and I accepted, to pick my son up in Mississauga and get him to Brampton (if you've ever been to either place, you'll know why public transit is called Mississauga Chance-it...in this case, the car is king).

No problem, parental responsibility, etc.

Our 2003 Neon, however, had other ideas. Its been overheating, we took it to our local mechanic whom we trust, he can find nothing wrong, does some mechanic tricks, seems to work. We schedule some maintenance just in case, but the car will do for now.

Due to a family emergency in Hamilton, however, we've been putting some serious mileage on the poor thing. Mechanic tricks, see above, weren't really holding.

All this led to an overheated car on the 401 yesterday, the hottest day of the summer.

Sooo...relaying calls between me and my wife, I topped up the car with more water, got it to a great garage Derry Road Service & Per4mance 1165 Derry Road East
Mississauga, ON, L5T 1B6. Joe helped it get back on the road, which I had to do to get son home, then back to Toronto to pick up my wife.

I thought I could just keep it filled with water and using Joe's trick (i.e., make sure you don't put the cap back on tightly, it will last longer), but, not so much. Not trusting local mechanic, as he did not even know about the recall for the head gasket in the Neon (at 115K), I thought Joe deserved the business.

However, we were in Toronto, Joe is practically in Brampton.

Sooooo...at 9PM last night, book a car rental near Joe's place. Can't sleep all night, envisioning a death car again, so I get up and out the door at 6:30 (picking son up at 7:50). Car is fine all the way there, but I'm super early (arriving at 6:45). Eat at Mickey D's (the coffee IS pretty good), top up the water (see above), pick up son on time, deliver on time, car starts to overheat. Slight panic. I'm literally blocks away, what to do. Enterprise is delivering car to Joe's at 9, and, I may have forgotten to mention, I need to be back home in Toronto at 10 for our air conditioning guy.

To make an overly long story shorter: get car there ok(ish - who knows what additional damage I caused...), Enterprise was right on time, I got home in time, AC guy shows up on time...only to tell me that I needed Pureon, not Freon I had told him. He can weld the leak, but can't load until he gets Pureon. Slight panic again, I'm almost out of vacation days, can't readily re-book new ones so quickly...

DEEP BREATH time. Ask nicely if he can come back. Sure, he says.

CUE: large weight off shoulders...

Longer story short: Venting done, for now. By 6PM, I will be done driving for the week, I'll have air for the hot nights coming up, and the car will be fixed.

Crossing all available body parts now...

And THAT worked out well for the government of the day. All the Tories have to do now is find a leader and they'll be laughing.

Now, George has the $ to pump into Toronto's infrastructure. This will look very good on a resume for mayor, no?

Well, I say in the "weighing his options" suite:

The Scenario:

McGuinty leaves (I'd say only 1% chance of of his staying), but Smitherman claims burn out after being Minister of Health for seven years (or less, depending on a cabinet shuffle, but traditionally, you can only go to Minister of Finance from Health without it looking like a demotion).

Smitherman goes for the Mayor's chair, waiting out the inevitable quagmire that the Federal Libs found themselves in.

Oh, he might try for the Liberal leadership immediately. But if he thinks that the Libs do not have a 100% chance of winning, then why not try for the mayor (who will be very, very vulnerable to a Liberal running).

If he gets it, great, he can still run for the Liberal leadership later, with a high profile job to help keep him in the news until then.

If the doesn't, he can still run after the next Liberal leader crashes and burns, ala their Federal cousins (see Dion, S.).

Just going on record here...

We live in a nice little, quiet neighbourhood. Nothing too fancy, very middle middle class. Although its only a few blocks away from where some nasty stuff has happened, the actual block is about as normal as you can get.

So Friday night my son and I were at the Marlies game. My wife had dropped us off and was going to pick us up later.

When she returned home, she noticed a group of kids, pre-high school, hanging out in our neigbour's driveway. Kinda suspicious, as they clearly weren't from our street. She didn't notice anything else, just that they were...there. You know how things like that stick out.

After the game, son and I settle in downstairs to watch some even more hockey, wife goes to bed. But just a few minutes later, I can hear her come downstairs, which is out-of-the-ordinary. I ask her if she forgot something, and she said "I think something is happening outside".

So, we go out to the corner and get the scoop: said group of kids were caught (literally) red handed spray painting a car. They scattered, and the neighbourhood men took off after them, one following a brat into the ravine. I go back inside, grab the closest pair of shoes (loafers for god's sake!) and my kick-ass five "D" cell MagLight, which gives great light, and looks (and apparently can act) as a billy club.

"There's one of them there!" neighbour lady yells, so my son and I take out after him. When we get there, he's being very, very loosely "held" by another neighbour. About 13 or so, and mouthy as all hell. Part bravado and part fear, the started telling us what NOT to do. "Don't touch me", "I don't know you", "What are you talking about". Etc. Funniest line was (to me): "What are you doing with a flashlight?".

"Its dark, son".

We eventually corralled him (without touching him, of course), making a citizen's arrest and herding him into the group that had spontaneously formed on the street. In the middle was Brat #2.

Requisite calls were made to the cops, followed by the non-requisite follow-up calls (the whole neigbourhood was buzzing by this time).

Fire truck came, then the ambulance. We had no use for the former, but one of the perps was a bit, lets say nervous by this time. Did I mention he didn't shut up? I don't think it was just nerves, either...might have been Red Bull, but I had to use one of my fave Cop Show lines: "innocent people usually don't talk as much as you do".

Eventually two plain clothes officers pull up, and started investigating. Statements were taken, etc., kids interrogated. Just like the movies, except in the middle of a middle class street in East end Toronto.

I thought it was over, but while I was over looking at the damage to the car (FA and part of a G...wonder what they were trying to spell?) another neighbour lady yells "stop that truck!"

Ok, as mentioned, I have my MagLight, but I don't know how well its going to do against a Dodge Ram...but I yell to the driver to stop for a second, someone wants to talk to him.

Seems the third kid was in the truck, being driven around (speculation only) by the father of one of the apprehended brats to find out what happened to them. He found out pretty quick.

After that, there wasn't much else to do but mill around. A nice night, but rather tiring. I don't think they were done for another hour, which makes me better understand how complicated a real crime like murder can take to investigate.

I don't know if the little morons are afraid of the cops, or even their parents, but I think, and hope, they learnt that they weren't just tagging one person's car. They took on, and lost, to a neighbourhood.
